The story of Canada’s Home children began in the large cities of Britain around the mid-1800's. Orphaned, abandoned and pauper children were either placed in orphanages or left to care for themselves. Many of them lived homeless in the streets. They were sent to Canada by churches and organizations in the belief that they would have a better quality of life in Canada. Families in Canada welcomed them as a source of cheap farm labour and domestic help. Many of the children were badly treated and abused, but others did enjoy a better life than they would if they remained in Great Britain.
From 1869 until the late 1930s, over 100,000 juveniles were sent to Canada from Great Britain. CRUICKSHANK, J.
