Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

According to the articles (linked via the dates above), Samuel Cruikshank was being held for the attempted murder of a farmer named John Montgomery. Cruikshank claimed he was a member of the Buzzard Gang and also that when he was previously in the Western States he was a member of Jesse James' gang. He boasted about all the "desperate and bloody exploits of the gang", and was described as being in the habit of "wearing two large revolvers and a big dirk conspicuously displayed in his belt".

It appears that John Montgomery who survived the shooting died in the next couple of months probably from blood poisoning since the doctor was unable to remove the bullet.

P.S. - I have been unable so far to find out Samuel's fate, although presumably he would have been hanged.
